EKO Hospital Founder, Sonny Kuku emerges UNIBEN new Pro-Chancellor
The co-Founder of one of Lagos’ most popular health facilities, EKO Hospital (Ekocorp Plc), Olor’ogun (Dr) Sonny Folorunso Kuku, has been named the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, University of Benin.
CAMPUS GIST reports that, Kuku was among the 22 newly appointed Pro-Chancellors of some Federal institutions and Inter-University Centres by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who announced the appointments on Thursday, said the decision was following the expiration of the tenures of Governing Councils of some Federal universities and Inter-University Centres.
Born on January 3, 1944 in Jos, Plateau state, Kuku is a master Physician, an Endocrinologist, a consummate Businessman, renowned Scholar, Philanthropist, Administrator and self-made Billionaire.
He holds several degrees and Fellowships in medicine, including two doctorates. He has been the Joint Chief Medical Director and co-Chairman at the EKO Hospital (Ekocorp Plc) which he co-founded in 1978.
Dr. Sonny Kuku has also been a Trustee and a distinguished Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, President and Trustee West African College of Physicians, President of the Pan African Diabetes Study Group, and President of the Nigerian NCD Alliance.
He also was Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities and Committee of Chairmen of Federal Tertiary Hospitals, the first African Honorary Fellow of the Colleges of Physicians of South Africa and Glasgow, and holds an Honorary DSc Ed (TAUSED).
Kuku is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, and was awarded the National Honour of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR) in 2003. He was Chairman of Ecobank Nigeria, and the Chairman of the Human Capital Policy Commission of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group. He became the first African Master of the American College of Physicians in 2005, Honorary Life President of the Nigerian Society of Endocrinology, and Honorary Life Patron of the Diabetes Association of Nigeria.
He is Chairman Clina-Lancet Laboratories and Director of Total Health Trust Ltd among others.
A widely cited author (including ‘Who is Who’ in the World), he holds several traditional titles including the hereditary Olor’ogun of ljebu-ode. He is the Founder of The Sonny Kuku Foundation.
Kuku bagged a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (with honors) from the University Lagos in 1970, Master of Science in Pathology, University of Lagos in 1972; Doctor of Philosophy from the University London in 1974 and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Lagos in 1987.
From 1968-1969, Kuku became a Predoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester, New York, United States; 1970-1971, House officer, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); 1971-1974, Research Assistant, Royal Postgraduate Medical School London, Mpumalanga, South Africa; 1974-1975, Senior fellow, Priztker School Medicine, Illinois, United States; 1976-1978, Senior lecturer, University of Lagos College of Medicine; and has been the Chairman and Joint Chief Medical Director, Division Medicine at EKO Hospital Lagos, from 1978 till date.
The new UNIBEN Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council is a recipient of several awards including the First Distinguished Alumnus Award, University of Lagos (1991) and Ambassador of Goodwill award, City of Freetown, Sierea Leone (1992), amongst others.
Meanwhile, the new Governing Councils, which are intended to reinvigorate governance through appropriate policies and guidance to the Institutions, would be inaugurated on Thursday, 15th July, 2021 at the Idris Abdulkadir Auditorium, National Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium, Abuja, at 10am.
